If you tend to worry a lot, even when there’s no reason, you may have generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). GAD means that you are worrying constantly and can’t control it.
A phobia is an uncontrollable, irrational, and lasting fear of a certain object, situation, or activity. This fear can be so overwhelming that a person may go to great lengths to avoid the source of this fear..
This is a sudden, intense fear that lasts for several minutes. It happens when there is no real danger.
Depression is a whole-body illness. It involves the body, mood, and thoughts. Depression affects the way you eat and sleep. When you have depression, you can’t “pull yourself together” and get better. Treatment is often needed and many times crucial to recovery.
You may have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), if you’ve been through a traumatic event and are having trouble dealing with it. Such events may include a car crash, rape, domestic violence, military combat, or violent crime.
If you have BDD, you may be so upset about the appearance of your body that it gets in the way of your ability to live normally. Many of us have what we think are flaws in our appearance. But if you have BDD, your reaction to this “flaw” may become overwhelming.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a brain-based, or neurodevelopmental, disorder. It's also called attention deficit disorder. It's often first diagnosed in childhood
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. It causes you to have cycles of extreme mood changes that go beyond normal ups and downs. You will have periods of feeling joyful, energized, and excited (called mania). These are followed by periods of feeling sad and depressed.
Schizophrenia is a complex brain disorder. It often runs in families and can cause troubling symptoms. These may include hearing voices, and having trouble thinking clearly and relating to others. It often starts suddenly in early adulthood. There is no cure for this illness, but it can be managed with medicine and supportive therapy.
Insomnia means having trouble sleeping at night, staying asleep, or both. It's one of the most common sleep disorders. You might constantly wake up earlier than you would like, perhaps in the wee hours of the morning, and find yourself unable to go back to sleep.
Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, a form of self-starvation; bulimia nervosa, in which individuals engage in repetitive cycles of binge-eating alternating with self-induced vomiting or starvation; binge-eating disorder (BED), which resembles bulimia but without compensatory behaviors to avoid weight gain (e.g. vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative)
For people without a personality disorder, personality traits are patterns of thinking, reacting, and behaving that remain relatively consistent and stable over time. People with a personality disorder display more rigid thinking and reacting behaviors that make it hard for them to adapt to a situation.
Autism spectrum disorder is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by restricted or repetitive behaviors and difficulties with social communication and interaction. The symptoms are present from early childhood and impact daily functioning. Although autism can’t be cured, early diagnosis and treatment can make a dramatic difference in a child’s life and ability to function at home, school and social settings. The needs of children with ASD may change as they grow and develop. We offer specialized developmental and psychological services to help children with ASD navigate challenges that may arise.
Intrusive thoughts and a preoccupation with death and dying are what define suicidal ideation. Occurring due to stress and a person’s inability to cope in a healthy manner, the presence of suicidal ideations frequently mean that an individual is suffering from a mental illness. Ideations can range in gravity from brief thoughts about death to well-established plans for how an individual will end his or her own life. Sadly, if this kind of thought process persists, a person is at an increased risk for self-harm, attempts at suicide, or suicide completion.
Focuses on stress response, relaxation techniques and strategies to manage stress using humor, living in the moment and relaxation techniques.
